This presentation by Jon Kabat-Zinn was excerpted from the 24th Annual International Trauma Conference held in Boston, MA.
In recent years there has been increasing recognition of mindfulness and self-awareness as the foundations of emotional responsiveness, psychological change, and personal growth. This workshop highlights work that constitutes the cutting edge on the neurobiological foundations of stress resilience, mindfulness, the effects of trauma on self-awareness and self-organization, and how mindfulness meditation and yoga can change the brain.

For the practising mental health clinician, the ability to rapidly identify processing disorders and make targeted treatment recommendations is one of the therapeutic skills which separate the good from the great. Watch this seminar recording and gain a wide range of concrete skills including assessment of processing and organizational deficits from multiple perspectives, and managing symptom overlap among related disorders. You will be able to think clearly about the common “Bipolar or ADHD?” assessment question. By the end of the seminar recording you will know how to avoid the most common diagnostic error in executive dysfunction assessment. Take home a “toolbox” of developmentally appropriate targeted interventions for the executive dysfunctions associated with ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Central Auditory Processing Disorder.

Anthropologist Helen Fisher uses her brain scanning studies (fMRI) of people happily in love, rejected in love and in love long-term to discuss the traits of romantic love, love-at-first-sight, and addiction to love. She focuses on her current research on 40,000 men and women to propose that four broad cognitive/behavioural personality trait constellations have evolved associated with the neural systems for dopamine, serotonin, testosterone and oestrogen. Then she discusses her data on mate choice among 28,000 individuals to propose why we are chemically drawn to one person rather than another.

In her lecture, Helen Fisher discusses four biologically based styles of thinking and behaving and, using her data on mate choice among 28,000 individuals, shows why we are chemically drawn to one person rather than another. In this workshop Fisher goes deeper into these natural temperament constellations, and discusses how partners with very different (and similar) biological styles of thinking and behaving interact to create great joy, confusion and sorrow in their partnerships.

Psychotherapy enables individuals to identify patterns of thought, feeling, and behaviour that may be restricting them from living a full and rewarding life. Some of these aspects of a person’s presenting profile may be due to experiences from attachment relationships while others may be a function of inborn neural propensities called temperament.

Today, families and children are experiencing extreme stress. This can be reflected in children’s diminished academic, attention, and social skills to problems in sensory processing, physical health, depression and self-injurious behaviours. This creates conflict in following routines, managing emotional or physical responses or adjusting to transitions. Ranging from those who react to stress with violent behaviours, or who are overly withdrawn, to high achievers, this extreme stress that shows itself in sensory processing issues crosses cultural and economic barriers.

Clients are desperately trying to make sense of their symptoms of depression, free-floating anxiety, addictive behaviors, dysregulated emotions, physiological arousal, and seemingly unrelated medical issues. They look to you to create an understanding, provide an accurate diagnosis, and layout an effective treatment approach; however, you find that you can’t without understanding and addressing their “why”. The science is clear and overwhelming about the lasting effects of adverse childhood experiences, developmental trauma, and attachment wounds.

In this video, you will learn key insights regarding the neuroscience of addiction from the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, one of the largest investigations of childhood abuse and neglect, and the impact on later-life health and well-being. You will understand the important assessment and treatment implications from neuroscience that show us addiction is experience dependent, not substance dependent.
